LOCAL BUS & LAND TRANSPORT
From Venice Marco Polo Airport, the local ACTV bus is a practical
and affordable way to reach Venezia. Take ACTV Line 5
from the airport to Piazzale Roma, the main road
transport terminal at the entrance to the historic centre.
From Piazzale Roma, continue on foot to your hotel or connect to the vaporetto network if your accommodation is further into the historic centre. Venezia itself is largely pedestrian, so walking is the main way to explore the historic city once you arrive.

transport network. Check the current airport fare and validate
your ticket before boarding. Allow extra time if travelling with

ST. MARK’S SQUARE
Venezia’s most famous public square and the centrepiece of the
historic city. Explore St. Mark’s Basilica, the Campanile, the
surrounding arcades, and the waterfront of the Piazzetta. Early
morning and evening are particularly atmospheric and offer a
quieter experience than the middle of the day.

Day 1: Arriving Mid-Day in Venezia

Arrival & First Walk Through Venezia
- Arrival in Venezia: We arrived in Venezia around midday and made our way towards the historic centre and our hotel.
- Walk Through the City: Rather than taking the quickest route, we walked through the streets and canals, taking in the atmosphere and getting our first impressions of the city.
- Hotel Check-In: After arriving at the hotel and dropping off our luggage, we headed back out to start exploring.
- Wandering Around Venezia: We spent the rest of the afternoon simply wandering without a strict itinerary, crossing small bridges, following narrow streets, discovering quiet canals, and stopping whenever something caught our attention.
- Evening Walk: As the day came to an end, we continued exploring the quieter streets and canals before stopping for our first Venetian dinner.
Travel Tip: One of the best ways to experience Venezia is to leave some time completely unplanned. Put the map away and simply wander — some of the most atmospheric corners are found away from the main tourist routes.
Day 2: Sunrise at Accademia & Empty Piazza San Marco
Early Morning
Sunrise Over the Grand Canal
- Ponte dell’Accademia (📍MAP): We woke up before sunrise and walked through the quiet streets towards Ponte dell’Accademia to watch the first light appear over the Grand Canal.
- Grand Canal at Sunrise: With almost nobody around, the early morning light transformed the palaces, water, and boats into one of the most beautiful scenes of the trip.
- Piazza San Marco (📍MAP): From the Accademia area we continued walking towards Piazza San Marco, arriving while the square was almost completely empty.
- St. Mark’s Basilica (📍MAP): We admired the basilica and the surrounding architecture without the usual crowds that fill the square later in the day.
- Doge’s Palace (📍MAP): We continued around the waterfront and admired the extraordinary architecture of the Doge’s Palace and the surrounding buildings.
Photography Tip: Sunrise is one of the best times to photograph Venezia. The streets are almost empty, the light is softer, and the Grand Canal and Piazza San Marco can feel completely different from their daytime appearance.
Late Morning to Afternoon
Exploring More of Venezia
- Rialto Bridge (📍MAP): We walked towards the Rialto area and crossed one of Venezia’s most famous bridges.
- Grand Canal (📍MAP): We followed the Grand Canal and explored the small streets and bridges branching away from the main route.
- San Polo (📍MAP): We wandered through the historic San Polo neighbourhood, discovering quieter squares, canals, and traditional Venetian streets.
- Dorsoduro (📍MAP): Later we continued into Dorsoduro, one of the more relaxed parts of the city, with beautiful canals, churches, and less crowded streets.
- Santa Maria della Salute (📍MAP): We finished our exploration around the impressive church overlooking the entrance to the Grand Canal.
Travel Tip: After an early sunrise start, take a break during the afternoon before heading out again for the evening. Venezia is best experienced slowly, with plenty of time to stop for coffee, cicchetti, or an unplanned walk.
Day 3: Half-Day Trip to Burano & Afternoon in Venezia
Morning to Early Afternoon
Burano — The Most Colourful Island in Italy
- Vaporetto to Burano (📍MAP): We took a vaporetto across the Venetian Lagoon for a half-day trip to Burano.
- Colourful Streets: Burano immediately felt completely different from central Venezia, with brightly painted houses lining the narrow canals and streets.
- Canals of Burano: We spent the morning simply wandering around the island, crossing small bridges and exploring the colourful waterfronts.
- Local Streets & Houses: Away from the main square, we found quieter corners where the colourful houses and everyday island life created some of the most memorable scenes of the trip.
- Return to Venezia: After exploring Burano, we returned to Venezia in the afternoon and spent the remainder of the day wandering around the historic centre.
Travel Tip: Burano is particularly enjoyable when explored without a strict route. Allow time to wander beyond the main waterfront and discover the quieter residential streets.
Day 4: Back Home

Departure from Venezia
- Final Walk: We enjoyed one last walk through the streets and canals of Venezia before collecting our luggage and checking out.
- Transfer to Venice Marco Polo Airport (📍MAP): We made our way towards the airport for the journey home, leaving Venezia behind after a memorable long weekend.
Travel Tip: Allow plenty of time for the journey to the airport, especially if travelling with luggage. Depending on where you stay, reaching your transport connection may involve walking across bridges and through narrow streets.
