Cape Town is one of those places that feels impossible not to fall in love with. With dramatic landscapes, towering mountains and endless ocean views, it has an incredible way of bringing you close to nature while still offering all the energy and character of a vibrant city. What makes the Western Cape so special is how much there is to discover beyond Cape Town itself. A drive along the coast is an experience in its own right, with winding roads, beautiful beaches, rugged cliffs and breathtaking views around almost every corner. Further inland, the charming towns of Franschhoek and Stellenbosch offer a completely different side of the region, with beautiful vineyards, historic streets, excellent food and a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. One of my favourite things about the area is how quickly the scenery changes. One moment you are exploring a lively neighbourhood or historic town, and the next you are surrounded by mountains, vineyards or the wild coastline. And while the landscapes are undeniably spectacular, it is often the little details that stay with you, from the colourful fynbos flowers to the warmth of the local people. The Western Cape is the kind of place that stays with you long after you leave, and it is somewhere I would happily return to again and again.

7 Days Drive Itinerary in Cape Town and Beyond
A seven day trip through the Western Cape is a wonderful way to experience some of South Africa’s most beautiful landscapes, from Cape Town and the Atlantic coast to the vineyards of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. December is a particularly lovely time to visit, as it is summer in South Africa, with warm, sunny days that are ideal for road trips, exploring the coast and enjoying time outdoors. The journey can begin in Cape Town, taking in the city, Table Mountain and the surrounding coastline before heading out on the road. From there, a scenic drive along the coast offers plenty of opportunities to stop at beaches, viewpoints and charming coastal towns. Continuing inland, Stellenbosch and Franschhoek bring a completely different atmosphere, with rolling vineyards, beautiful mountain scenery, wine estates and wonderful places to eat. For me, one of the best things about a seven day itinerary is having enough time to enjoy the journey without feeling rushed. There is something special about getting behind the wheel, following the coast and stopping whenever a view catches your eye. In December, the warm weather makes it even easier to spend long days outside, although it is worth remembering that conditions can vary between the coast, mountains and Winelands. It is also a fantastic time of year for photography. The long summer days, golden evening light, colourful fynbos and dramatic coastline create beautiful conditions for capturing the landscapes. Whether you are exploring Cape Town, driving beside the ocean or relaxing among the vineyards, the scenery constantly gives you another reason to stop and take it all in. With well maintained roads, relatively easy driving and so much variety packed into a week, this is a trip that feels adventurous without being difficult. Seven days is enough to experience the highlights while still leaving plenty of time to slow down, enjoy the scenery and simply take in the atmosphere of the Western Cape.
Day 1 to 5 Cape Town
Day 1 Arrival and Coastal Views
Arrival
We arrived in Cape Town and collected our rental car. The drive from the airport gave us our first glimpses of the iconic city bowl and the surrounding mountain range.
Check in and Rest (📍MAP)
We settled into our accommodation, unpacked, and took some time to rest after the long night flight. We chose to stay in Tamboerskloof.
Camps Bay (📍MAP) and Signal Hill (📍MAP)
We drove to Camps Bay for lunch and explored one of the most beautiful seaside areas of Cape Town. We walked along the palm lined promenade before driving up to Signal Hill, where we watched the sunset over the Atlantic.
Day 2 High Peaks and Vibrant Streets
Table Mountain (📍MAP)
We drove to the Table Mountain Cable Car Station and took the cable car to the summit. Table Mountain was one of the most distinctive flat topped mountains we had ever seen. The revolving cable car gave us a 360 degree preview of the incredible views waiting for us at the top.
Bo Kaap District (📍MAP)
We drove back into town and explored the Bo Kaap District. This historic Cape Malay neighbourhood was one of the most colourful areas we visited in South Africa, with cobblestone streets and brightly painted facades.
Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (📍MAP)
We visited the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa in the Waterfront area. The museum was housed in a strikingly redesigned historic grain silo and featured innovative exhibits and installations by contemporary African artists.

- It offered a profound look into the contemporary art scene across the African continent.
Victoria and Alfred Waterfront (📍MAP)
We ended our day at the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, a vast and bustling complex situated around a historic working harbour. We explored the area, enjoyed the coastal views, and took some time for dinner and shopping.

Day 3 Wildlife and Scenic Coastlines
Boulders Beach (📍MAP) and Muizenberg (📍MAP)
We drove to the famous Boulders Beach, where we walked along the wooden boardwalks and watched the African penguins. Visiting in the morning meant that we avoided the busiest part of the day. Afterwards, we drove to Muizenberg to see the sandy surfer beach and its iconic colourful beach huts.
Cape Point (📍MAP) and Cape of Good Hope (📍MAP)
We spent around 2 to 3 hours exploring the rugged southwesternmost tip of the continent. We hiked up to the Cape Point Lighthouse, walked along the scenic trails, and spotted wildlife including ostriches and baboons.
Scenic Drive Back to Town
We drove back via Noordhoek (📍MAP), where we admired the wide beach and beautiful mountain views. We then took Chapmans Peak Drive (📍MAP), a spectacular cliffside toll road with 114 curves and numerous viewpoints. The drive was particularly beautiful in the late afternoon, and we finished by passing through Hout Bay (📍MAP).
Day 4 Gardens and Sunsets
Kirstenbosch (📍MAP)
We explored the stunning Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, set against the eastern slopes of the mountain. We walked along the elevated canopy walkway known as the Boomslang and enjoyed the lush greenery and mountain scenery from above.
Beach and Relaxation
We chose one of our favourite beaches to unwind, either Camps Bay (📍MAP), Clifton Beaches (📍MAP), or Llandudno (📍MAP). We particularly enjoyed the sheltered Clifton coves, which were protected from the wind by massive granite boulders.
Sunset Beach (📍MAP)
We drove to Sunset Beach and watched the spectacular sunset over Table Mountain. From here, we enjoyed a completely different perspective of the city and its mountain backdrop.
Day 5 to 7 Franschhoek and Stellenbosch
Wine Country Exploration
Stellenbosch (📍MAP): We wandered through the historic town centre, which was famous for its Cape Dutch architecture and ancient oak trees. We enjoyed a wine tasting and had a lovely lunch at a local vineyard.
Franschhoek (📍MAP): We explored Franschhoek, which was known as the culinary capital, and rode the famous open air Wine Tram. We visited 2 to 3 exquisite wineries nestled deep in the valley and enjoyed the beautiful surroundings.
Departure
We enjoyed our final morning among the vineyards with a slow and decadent breakfast before packing up and heading back to the airport for our evening flight.
