Arriving in Cape Town and collecting the rental car. The drive from the airport offers your first glimpses of the iconic city bowl.

Drive to Camps Bay for lunch while exploring the most beautiful seaside of Cape Town. The palm lined promenade is perfect for a leisurely stroll. Afterwards, drive up to Signal Hill, which is the best spot for watching the sunset over the Atlantic.

Travel Tip Signal Hill parking fills up incredibly fast. Aim to arrive at least an hour before sunset to secure a good spot and lay down a picnic blanket.

Photography Tip Use a wide angle lens at Signal Hill during golden hour. You can capture the sweeping cityscape on one side and the sun dipping below the endless ocean horizon on the other.

Day 2 High Peaks and Vibrant Streets

Early Morning

Table Mountain (📍MAP)

Drive to the Table Mountain Cable Car Station to go up. Table Mountains are the most flat mountains in the world. The revolving cable car gives you a 360 degree preview of the incredible views waiting at the top.

Travel Tip Usually from 9am the queue is getting longer and longer to get the tickets and take the cable car up. Arrive early, and bring a warm jacket as the summit can be surprisingly chilly!

Photography Tip Keep an eye out for the friendly local rock hyraxes, known as dassies. They often sunbathe on the rocks and make for brilliant close up wildlife portraits against the blue sky.

Midday

Bo Kaap District (📍MAP)

Drive back to the town and explore the Bo Kaap District. This historic Cape Malay neighbourhood is the most colourful area in all of South Africa, filled with cobblestone streets and vibrant facades.

Photography Tip The bright houses photograph best on an overcast day or in the late afternoon. This prevents the harsh midday sun from creating blown out highlights and deep shadows.

Afternoon

Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (📍MAP)

Located within the Waterfront area, this museum is housed in a strikingly redesigned historic grain silo. It showcases innovative exhibits and installations primarily by contemporary African artists.

• The building architecture is considered a masterpiece of modern design.
• Offers a profound look into the contemporary art scene across the African continent.

Afternoon/Evening

Victoria and Alfred Waterfront (📍MAP)

Conclude your day at this vast, bustling complex situated on a historic working harbour. It serves as a premier destination for dining, shopping, and taking in coastal views.

• Features a wide array of restaurants ranging from casual cafes to high end dining.
• Home to various shopping boutiques and entertainment venues.
• Provides a picturesque atmosphere for a sunset walk along the water.

Day 3 Wildlife and Scenic Coastlines

Early Morning

Boulders Beach (📍MAP) and Muizenberg (📍MAP)

Drive to famous Boulders Beach to walk the wooden boardwalks and watch the African penguins. Morning time is the best to visit because it is not very busy yet. Afterwards, drive to Muizenberg to see the sandy surfer beach and the iconic colourful beach huts.

Photography Tip Use a zoom lens for the penguins to get crisp details without disturbing their natural habitat. At Muizenberg, a fast shutter speed will help you freeze the action of the crashing waves and surfers.

Midday

Cape Point (📍MAP) and Cape of Good Hope (📍MAP)

Spend 2 to 3 hours exploring the rugged southwesternmost tip of the continent. You can hike up to the Cape Point Lighthouse, walk the scenic trails, and enjoy some spectacular wildlife spotting including ostriches and baboons.

Travel Tip Keep a safe distance from the baboons and ensure all food is securely hidden away. Never feed them, as they are wild animals and can become aggressive.

Afternoon

Scenic Drive Back to Town

Drive back via Noordhoek (📍MAP) to see the wide beach with beautiful mountain views, then take Chapmans Peak Drive (📍MAP). This spectacular cliffside toll road offers 114 curves and numerous viewpoints, and is particularly beautiful in the late afternoon. Finish the drive passing through Hout Bay (📍MAP).

Photography Tip Pull over at the designated picnic spots along Chapmans Peak. The golden hour light hitting the sheer cliff faces while the road winds tightly around the mountain creates an epic landscape shot.

Day 4 Gardens and Sunsets

Morning

Kirstenbosch (📍MAP)

Explore the stunning Kirstenbosch botanical gardens, set right against the eastern slopes of the mountain. Walk along the elevated canopy walkway known as the Boomslang to bid farewell to the lush greenery from above.

Photography Tip A macro lens is perfect here. You can capture the intricate, alien like details of South Africa national flower, the King Protea, which grows abundantly in the gardens.

Midday / Afternoon

Beach and Relaxation

Choose your favourite beaches to unwind Camps Bay (📍MAP), Clifton Beaches (📍MAP), or Llandudno (📍MAP). The Clifton coves are sheltered from the wind by massive granite boulders.

Travel Tip The Atlantic ocean water is famously freezing. These pristine spots are generally much better for sunbathing, reading a book, and relaxing rather than taking a long swim.

Late Afternoon

Sunset Beach (📍MAP)

Drive to Sunset Beach for a spectacular sunset view above Table Mountain. This location gives you a completely different angle of the city profile.

Photography Tip Bring a tripod and use a slow shutter speed. This will allow you to capture the smooth, milky movement of the tide washing ashore with the mountain perfectly silhouetted in the background.

Day 5 to 7 Franschhoek and Stellenbosch

Note Leave Cape Town and drive towards Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. These are very picturesque places located just outside the city. You will stay overnight on Franschhoek Wine Farms for 2 nights, trading the ocean breeze for sweeping valleys.

Day 5 and 6

Wine Country Exploration

Stellenbosch (📍MAP): Wander through the historic town centre famous for its Cape Dutch architecture and ancient oak trees. Enjoy a wine tasting, and have a lovely lunch at a local vineyard.

Franschhoek (📍MAP): Known as the culinary capital, here you can ride the famous open air Wine Tram and visit 2 to 3 exquisite wineries nestled deep in the valley.

Travel Tip Book your Wine Tram tickets and lunch reservations well in advance, especially during the summer peak season, as the most popular estates fill up quickly.
