Cape Town is an absolute must visit. It is a magnificent place of dramatic landscapes, massive mountains, and truly stunning ocean views that will capture your heart. For years, I wanted to visit simply because the combination of wild nature, the iconic skyline, and the colourful coastal towns felt like a dream for anyone who loves taking photos. Every corner of the Western Cape feels like stepping into a different kind of natural wonder. You can walk through centuries old districts filled with the scent of sea salt and the sound of local artists at work, then turn a corner to find a towering rock formation stretching into the bright blue sky. The sheer scale of Table Mountain is incredible, but it is the small details, such as the vibrant flowers of the fynbos and the warmth of the local people, that truly make the place unforgettable. It is an area that encourages you to slow down and appreciate a completely unique pace of life.

CAPE TOWN SURVIVAL AND LOGISTICS GUIDE
Essential Ground Data for Travel and Planning
Before hitting the road, navigating South Africa smoothly requires some preparation. Below is the essential information needed to turn your trip into a seamless journey.
1. Driving and Car Rental
A road trip is the best way to see the Cape peninsula, but there are a few rules to remember.
- Keep Left South Africans drive on the left side of the road. Ensure you are comfortable with this before renting a vehicle.
- Documentation An international driving permit is highly recommended and often required by rental companies if your licence is not printed in English.
- Parking and Car Guards When parking in public spaces, you will often encounter informal car guards wearing high visibility vests. It is customary to tip them 5 to 10 Rand in cash when returning to your vehicle.
2. Money and Payments
The local currency is the South African Rand ZAR.
- Cards vs Cash Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in restaurants, shops, and petrol stations. However, keeping small denominations of cash is essential for tips and small market purchases.
- Tipping Practices Tipping is customary. Aim for 10 to 15 percent at sit down restaurants, as service charges are rarely included in the final bill.
3. Safety and Security
Cape Town is a beautiful city, but standard urban safety measures apply.
- Vehicle Safety Never leave valuables visible in your rental car. Always lock your doors and park in well lit, secure areas.
- Walking Around Stick to well populated areas during the day. Avoid walking alone at night; use reputable ride hailing apps like Uber to travel after dark instead.
4. Power and Connectivity
South Africa occasionally experiences scheduled power outages.
- Load Shedding This is the term for rolling blackouts used to manage the national grid. Download the EskomSePush app upon arrival to track the schedule for your specific area so you can plan battery charging accordingly.
- Mobile Data Purchasing an eSIM prior to arrival is the easiest way to stay connected for GPS navigation and translations.
